Practice Makes Perfect (well, almost!)

Our final blog assignment is to discuss what we gained from this class. Without a doubt I have to say confidence. It was with much trepidation that I tread into the waters of rendering with markers. I had just completed my first residential design studio course and had relied on pencils for rendering my final drawing. My only other foray into using markers was a landscape class I had taken a few years ago. It's fair to say this course has changed my opinion of rendering with markers and has greatly increased my confidence in using them.

The take away - similar to that of every other course I've taken in design - practice, practice, practice. Whether it's rendering with markers or honing computer skills, you've got to put in the effort daily to achieve the best results. While there's no news there (it's the same with everything in life), I'm always surprised by how people expect instant expertise.

So while I've developed a new level of confidence as a result of the time and effort put into this course, I won't be resting on my laurels. I'll be looking at things with a fresh perspective and thinking of ways to incorporate this new skill into future projects - after all, practice makes perfect!

  1. Simple and true.... as one of the professors of this course I find that in teaching it, I am actually functioning very much as a "Marker Therapist". One must do and then do it over and over. A recent visit to an Andrew Wyeth exhibit inspired me to work with pencils more. The exhibit was not of his finished work for the most part, but rather of the process he went through to hone the imagery to his requirements before bringing the elements together into a single image. I doubt any of the drawings I saw were ever intended for public viewing...some even had wrinkled paper. Nice post.
