Week 1: Getting Started
While many of my friends and colleagues are enjoying vacations and traveling to visit family and friends, eight fellow design students and I are enrolled in a Portfolio and Visual Presentation class. Our Week #1 blog assignment requires that we answer the following two questions: 1. What am I seeking to accomplish in this course? My goal is to improve my hand rendering skills, make "peace"with markers and to acquire a solid set of digital skills that will enable me to successfully articulate my designs to clients. 2. What role do I believe Interior Design plays in today's business climate? Interior Design and marketing are intrinsically linked. Design is very much a part of branding and when well executed distinguishes the ethos of a business and the sentiment of customers and can facilitate customer loyalty. Businesses that embrace the importance of interior design can incorporate sustainable materials and design into their entire business entity (building, goods and services, packaging) that will
attract consumers willing to pay for goods and services that reflect their
personal values.
The next time you visit your favorite retailer, restaurant or coffee house take a closer look at the design elements. Starbucks is a great example of a business that understands the value of interior design. They strive to use environmentally friendly materials and use design to make each store mirror the personality of the neighborhood in which it is located. They also have design centers around the globe to ensure that cultural nuances are appropriate for customers.
